Hibernation

A cold storage and large media file sharing solution that will benefit your budget and the planet.

What is media hibernation?

Hibernation is an optional, pay-per-use service that allows you to archive media files and retrieve them at any time, without transcoding them for broadcast. Media can be “hibernated” individually or in bulk. It is also possible to enrich them with metadata (tags, keywords, etc.) individually or in groups. Media can be “hibernated” individually or in bulk. It is also possible to enrich them with metadata (tags, keywords etc.) individually or by group action. This allows an instant search and retrieval of the selection corresponding to the search or filtering criteria. Streamlike therefore offers three media hosting states, depending on the need:

  • high availability for all “ready to play” media
  • archiving, which consists in sending the source file to an archiving server that remains switched off while waiting for a retrieval request. When this happens, the source file is re-encoded and the media returns to a high availability state.
  • Hibernation is similar to archiving in that the media file is also deposited on a server that is then shut down to await a recovery request. When it occurs, a secure, temporary download link is generated and sent to the requestor. The restored file is not re-encoded and does not become broadcastable.

Hibernated media are managed separately from the other media types (video, audio and Streamlive) that can be viewed from the “Media” page. They have their own page accessible from the side menu, just above the Analytics.

Use cases

Hibernation is used for example to store rushes from a shoot that you may need to share or reuse in future projects. It can also be used to store media for legal purposes.

As the links generated for the retrieval of hibernated media can be shared, they can be used for sharing large files, in the manner of a WeTransfer, with the added bonus of being able to build a selection of media to send from your hibernated catalog and a stronger security of your transfers.

If the need for archiving is temporary, it is very easy to select the hibernated media to be deleted.

Pricing of the service

The service is billed on the basis of the average annual volume of hibernated media storage and the total volume of data transferred for media recovery (or “de-hibernation”). Both of these metrics are expressed in gigabytes (GB). Transfer volume to hibernation (upload) is not charged.

Hibernation is part of Streamlike’s digital sobriety solutions. Cold storage without transformation on a server in standby mode requires less energy and generates less greenhouse gases than transcoding followed by high availability storage.
